This is a personally exciting time for me for two reasons. One is that there is a new initiative to showcase the skills and talents of our young people who have learning or other disabilities, called Natspec Inclusive Skills Competitions. This is a fantastic way for employers to see what these talented young people have to offer. Organised by Natspec (the National Association for Specialist Colleges), the competitions are as follows:
- Cloud 9 Film Festival 2013 (skills in film design and creation)
- Display Your Wares (skills in visual merchandising)
- The Band (skills in live musical performance and engaging with an audience)
- Introduction to a Gym Environment (skills in preparing new gym members)
- Gift of the Gab (skills in delivering presentations)
- Housekeeping for hens (skills in animal husbandry)
Competition can bring out the best in people, and these competitions enable people with a wide range of interests to get involved and show what they can do. This year is the first year of these competitions, and hopefully the start of something very exciting indeed. For more information please see here.
I’m particularly enthused by this initiative, because helping employers understand what they can gain by employing disabled people is what Evenbreak is all about. Imagine my delight when Natspec approached me to ask if I would be their Patron for these competitions! I accepted immediately, and feel extremely honoured and flattered to be closely involved in something which has the potential to change so many people’s lives. I’m really looking forward to the launch event next month, and to following the progress of these amazing young people. For more information, see here .
I will be keeping our readers updated as we go through this exciting first year, so please watch this space, or contact me if you would like to know more, or would be interested in getting involved (lots of opportunities for employers to support these competitions).
