Disability Confident is a scheme to encourage employers to become more confident and competent in terms of recruiting and retaining disabled people. For Evenbreak this is about removing barriers that can exclude talented disabled people from access to the workplace.
The scheme works with employers to:
- challenge attitudes towards disability
- increase understanding of disability
- remove barriers
- ensure that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations
There are three levels. The first level is a commitment to being disability confident, which involves signing up to the Disability Confident commitments and identifying at least one thing that you can do that will make a difference for disabled people.
Level two is about being a Disability Confident employer, which involves the self-assessment of your business against a set of statements grouped into 2 themes – getting the right people for your business and keeping and developing your people.
The third level is becoming a Disability Confident Leader, which means gaining recognition among your peers and acting as a champion within your local and business community, your supply chain and your networks. You’ll be showing disabled people that you are serious about leading the way and about helping other businesses to become Disability Confident. This involves having your self-assessment validated from outside your business and showing what you have done as a Disability Confident leader.
In Evenbreak’s case we wanted to be assessed by an organisation we trusted to be thorough, and turned to Mike Adams and his team at Purple. They were one of the first organisations to achieve Disability Confident Leader status, and have vast experience in the disability field.
We were thrilled to receive our confirmation as a Disability Confident Leader today, and hope to continue too learn and share best practice around inclusion and accessibility with other employers.
