Guest Blog: Disability Sanctuary – Peer Support

Peer support can be defined as help and support that people with lived experience of disability are able to give to one another.

Our Peer Support Network is distinct as it is being provided by people who have experience of disability for people who are disabled, suffering from a condition or their carers.

How can Peer Support help?

Our Disability Forum provides a place for you to talk about your concerns or about something that may be bothering you. Talking to someone who is impartial can help you clarify your feelings. Our Peer Support Network is friendly and informal and allows you to chat whenever you need additional support. This may be on a regular basis or you may just need a one off chat.

The members of our Peer Support Network won’t tell you what to do but they will listen and provide ongoing emotional support. Many of our members are awaiting therapy and are on long waiting lists, this site bridges that gap and enables you to chat to someone whilst awaiting professional support.

We also provide a calendar of Disability Events that may be beneficial in helping you manage your disability.

We all know how confusing the benefit system can be for disabled people so we have developed a platform that enables you to ask questions, seek support or just have a good old rant.

We also have a fun aspect which allows you to escape from the daily struggles of disability such as:

  • Fun videos
  • Fun pictures
  • Off topic chat
  • Recipes
  • Book discussions
  • And more …

We are always looking for volunteers to help around the site, so if you would like to be more involved in the development and running of the site please Contact Us.

The ongoing support and feedback from you and your peers allows us to develop a community that fulfils your individual needs. We are constantly developing and rely greatly on your feedback and suggestions to make the site a continued success. If you have any feedback or suggestions then please Contact Us.
