We invite employers who advertise job vacancies on Evenbreak to tell us what diversity and inclusion looks like at their organisation. This week, we want to introduce you to Telegraph Media Group…
About Telegraph Media Group
The Telegraph is an award-winning, multimedia news brand that has been synonymous with quality, authority, and credibility for more than 160 years. They are renowned for the analysis, perspective, opinion and insight that their journalism provides to a diverse and discerning audience.
Why is it important to your company to employ disabled people?
At The Telegraph Media Group, we know diversity is key to ensuring our workforce reflects the society we live in. Diversity of all under-represented groups supports us to have better understanding, insight, and a greater level of creativity and productivity. At Telegraph Media Group, we foster a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we are committed to building a team that reflects a wide variety of skills, perspectives, and backgrounds. We believe in equality of opportunity and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.
Have you got any other Inclusive Recruitment Processes?
We ensure that all job descriptions are inclusive, and we offer the necessary support at every stage of the recruitment process if required. All reasonable adjustments are supported by our Talent Acquisition team who work closely with the hiring managers to ensure that all arrangements are put in place. We run manager training which expressly looks at how an open process in recruitment is achieved. Guidance and support for all hiring managers is always available via our People team.
What else do you offer disabled employees?
Supporting disabled employees and creating an inclusive and accessible environment is a primary focus for the Diversity and Inclusion team. We have run workshops, created a new handbook on supporting neurodiverse employees, and developed a new speaker series with employees sharing their lived experiences of disabilities.
Our ‘Able’ Network – our employee resource group for individuals with disabilities or long-term conditions at Telegraph Media Group – works in partnership with the organisation to create an inclusive and accessible working environment. This enables all employees to fulfil their potential, provides peer support, and drives engagement in disability issues at Telegraph Media Group.
TMG provides workplace adjustments and access to work requirements for all disabled employees. We also ensure that strategies are in place to facilitate access and egress for individuals with mobility limitations, cognitive impairments, and visual or hearing impairments. Our Reasonable Adjustments policy aims to support all colleagues (employees and job applicants) who require workplace adjustments and help inform colleagues and managers to better understand how they can support those with disabilities. Employees are encouraged to create a Workplace Adjustment Passport, which ensures that managers are aware of required adjustments from the outset avoiding the need for the employee to have to continually explain their requirements.
We recognise the importance of providing a careers website that is inclusive and available for all user groups. We use the Recite Me web accessibility and language toolbar to ensure the website is fully accessible for all readers.
Have you been recognised for inclusion?
We are proud to have been accredited as a Disability Confident Leader (Level 3). This certification celebrates our work in recruiting, retaining, and developing disabled staff. The government Disability Confident Employer Scheme helps identify employers who are actively committing to inclusion and diversity in the workplace. Approximately 17,500 companies are signed up to the government-recognised scheme, under 500 are at Level 3, and within this, only 6 other media organisations are at Level 3.
