Introducing Sarah C …
To find out more about Sarah, we asked her a few questions…
What would be your dream role?
I would love to be involved in the EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity) sector, which is growing in its profile and importance. And as a wheelchair user myself, I find it fascinating how we think about disability; what it means, and also what it means in different countries. I did a Masters Module at UCL on Disability and Development, and would love to combine the learning from that course with my experience in marketing and communications. .
What do people you’ve worked with or volunteered with say about you?
I hope they would say that I’m a team player, who is positive and enthusiastic, as well as being very professional in my dealings with people. My professionalism is reflected in having worked as an Executive PA in the City of London at a global marketing and communications company.
What are you particularly proud of?
Not long after I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia I travelled to Argentina on my own, as I wanted to feel I was going on a proper adventure. I spent a year there, travelling, studying and working. Looking back, I surprised myself – I don’t know if I could do it now!
Can you tell us something not many people would know about you?
Something I’ve really got into is cycling. It’s something I absolutely love doing – it gives me freedom, discipline and exercise. I think a lot of people think because I’m a wheelchair user, when you say cycling, they go ‘whaaat?’, but essentially it’s a three-wheeler trike. I have got really quite into it!
What’s your disability?
I have Friedreich’s Ataxia, which is a neurological degenerative condition. I’ve recently become a Media Ambassador for Ataxia UK, bringing information, support and awareness to the conditions and the charity.
I am currently undertaking a Professional Diploma in Social Media and Marketing. I am also a CELTA qualified Teacher of English as a Foreign Language.
I have my own Instagram page, @thisablegirl in which I post about inclusivity and living with Friedreich’s Ataxia.
